Mopping, you should do it correctly. Applying wrong methods would give poor results or bad streaks or even damage to the floors. Systematic mopping starts from removing furniture (chairs, tables, and rugs) to mopping each area – leaving no surface or corner untouched. Correct mopping creates effectiveness and efficiency of the cleaning.
Let Xlent Cleaning share this step-by-step guide on mopping the floors correctly and get the best results.
1. Clear the area
Before your actual mopping starts, you should clear the area. Remove all furniture (tables, chairs, etc.), and rugs (if practical). When you find your furniture dirty, clean them before moving to prevent dirt. Make sure that you can reach every spot on the floor while cleaning or mopping.
2. Choose the proper tools & materials
In advance, collect necessary tools and cleaning solution for the job. You can choose a string or strip or sponge-based mop on the nature of the floor (hardwoods, vinyl, linoleum, and tiles). Also, choose a quality chemical suitable for floor type. Also, you should manage have safety signage.
3.Sweep or vacuum the floor before you mop
Your floors collect a lot of debris. Mopping cannot be effective if you do it without sweeping or vacuuming. So, you should sweep the area to remove the solid debris and crumbs, and quickly vacuum the dust before you start mopping there.
4. Choose the right mop
Several varieties of mops are available in the market, each serving a different function. String mob (usually with a wringer) is the most popular one, and it is mostly used in commercial premises – offices, institutions or restaurants. Sponge mops are best for hardwood and laminate flooring due to their ability to hold minimal amounts of water. Strip mops are perfect for reaching floor corners and edges. So, choose and use the right mops as per your requirements in the cleaning spots.
5. Use cleaning chemical to suit the floor type
You should use the right cleaning materials and techniques based on flooring materials – hardwoods, vinyl, linoleum, and tiles. You can use mild soaps and a damp mop while cleaning hardwood floors, but avoid using too much water to keep the wood from warping. Vinegar and water can be alternative solution for cleaning vinyl and ceramic floor if you want to avoid chemical.
6. Prepare right amount of cleaning solution
Mix the chemical or soap with warm water to prepare the right amount of cleaning solution. Keep the bucket half-full so that the mop can be immersed wholly in the water, and it avoids spilling over. Get the next bucket with clean water for rinsing the mob. When the cleaning solution becomes dirty or looks dark, change it with the fresh one. Make sure that you are only using clean water and quality cleaning solution on your floor.
7. Mop the floors in sections
Mopping the floors in small sections can make getting rid of grime build-up and debris easier. Dividing the floors into sections and mopping it helps your mop faster and easier. It maximizes your efficiency. Start by mopping one corner of the room and work backwards towards the exit. In some persistent sticky spots, you may need to scrub the floors with paper towels or sponges. Each time you wipe a section, you repeat these steps until you have the whole floor clean.
8. Clean the tools and let the floors dry
When you step on the wet floor, although cleaned perfectly, it leaves some streaks there. Moving furniture back in their places in a hurry makes the situation worse. When the mopping is finished, keep the doors and windows open to let air in and dry the mopped floor. Soak the head of the mop in bleach-water solution for about 10 minutes to disinfect it. This minimizes the growth of bacteria and mould in the surplus.
Until your floor becomes completely dry, make sure that no one enters or steps on it.
